OF SOUTHWEST ASIA

MEDITERRANEAN SEA

  • Connected to the Atlantic Ocean
  • Almost enclosed by land
  • It is bordered by 21 countries
  • Also connected to the Red Sea

DEAD SEA

  • Also known as the Salt Sea
  • People can float on the sea due to natural buoyancy
  • Similar to the Great Salt Lake in Utah in the US
  • Dead Sea area has been a major center of health research

HINDU KUSH

  • On of the great watersheds of Central Asia
  • Stretches between central Afghanistan and northern Pakistan
  • The mountain range divides Central and Southern Asia
  • The name literally means "Kills the Hindu"

EUPHRATES RIVER

  • Longest river in western Asia
  • Flows through Turkey, Syria, and Iraq
  • Many great civilizations developed along its bank
  • Over 50 species of fish can be found in this river

JORDAN RIVER

  • Has significance of Judaism and Christianity
  • Begins near Mount Hermon and ends at the Dead Sea
  • In some places it is highly polluted
  • Environmentalists are afraid of the river dying

TIGRIS RIVER

  • Has been an important transport route
  • Has been heavily dammed in Turkey and Iraq to provide enough water
  • Approximately 1,800 m long
  • The name means "the fast one"
