WHAT DID THESE PEOPLE MOVE FOR?

  • Not many job opportunities in China
  • Left China for financial reasons
  • Left behind family in China
  • Anti-immigration groups, Chinese Exclusion Act

WHAT WAS THEIR EXPERIENCE?

  • $35/month for food, tents
  • Seasickness, bug-infested food, costly, boredom
  • Houses with gold furniture
  • Needed miners, cooks, railroad workers, etc.
  • Racism, high tension - murder and thievery
