Overview of the 90s & 2000

In the 90's & 2000 there were many tragedies that occurred. Most of these tragedies were political and involved the government.

BILL CLINTON

  • 42nd President from 1993 to 2001
  • Signed the North America Free Trade Agreement
  • Famous for scandal with Monica Lewinsky
  • A stunningly successful president

GEORGE W. BUSH

  • September 11 2001 Bush declared war on terrorism

OJ SIMPSON

  • Later arrested in Las Vegas for armed robbery and kidnapping

BARRACK OBAMA

  • First black and 44th president of America
  • Won the nobel peace prize in 2009
  • Barack means "one who is blessed" in Swahili
  • Lived in Hawaii and Indonesia

OSAMA BIN LADEN

  • Responsible for 9/11 terrorist attacks
  • Raised in a great wealth
  • Has 50 brothers and sisters
  • Declared holy war against United States

9-11 AND WAR ON TERRORISM

  • 1.8 million tons of wreckage cleaned up over 9 months

NAFTA/ GLOBALIZATION

USA PATRIOT ACT

  • Allows law enforcement to use surveillance against more crimes of terror
  • Law enforcement allowed to follow sophisticated terrorists trained to evade detection
  • Prohibits the harboring terrorists
  • Punished terrorist attacks on mass transit systems

DECADE OF WAR

  • War with Iraq
  • Following 9/11
  • USA had to fight back on "terrorism"
  • Catastrophe as bug as hurricane Katrina

DESERT STORM

  • First major foreign crisis for the USA since the Cold War
  • USA set troops next to Kuwait incase of attack
  • 500,000 americans troops sent out

OKLAHOMA CITY BOMBING

  • Bombing of Alfred P. Murrah Federal Building in downtown OKC
  • 168 people left dead
  • Was worst terrorist attack on U.S. Soil until 9/11
  • Timothy McVeigh was convicted on all 11 counts and sentenced to death

TV/MOVIES/music

  • Toy Story 2 was released in 1999 and continues to be a very popular movie
  • Britney Spears's "...Baby One More Time" was a chart topper in 1999

Y2K

  • $308 billion dollars estimated to have been spent on remediating y2k

STEROIDS IN SPORTS

  • "The steroids era" in Major League Baseball refers to when many MLB players used PED's
  • In 2003 the first steroid policy was introduced in the MLB
  • Many olympic athletes were banned for doping such as Justin Gatlin (U.S. Sprinter)
  • Lots of controversy on the topics of steroids and PED's in baseball still

RISE OF THE INTERNET

  • The first website went online on August 6, 1991
  • The first ever picture on the internet was an all-girl band
  • 37% of the world is estimated to use the internet
  • Americans account for 78% of the internet use
  • "The internet is becoming the town square for the global village of tomorrow" Bill Gates
