BACKGROUND

  • Mark Hopkins was born on September 1, 1813, in Henderson, New York
  • A primary investor of the Pacific Coast Railroad
  • Along with Sanford , Huntington, Crocker
  • These " four men were the considered the " big four"
  • Every project the Big Four embarked on was submitted to Hopkins for his final approval. All had implicit faith in his judgment, honesty, and integrity.

OTHER ACHIEVEMENT

  • When the California Gold Rush first began, Mark Hopkins created the” "New England Mining and Trading Company", a group of 26 men each of whom invested $500 to purchase goods and ship them to California .
  • By 1849, he arrived in San Francisco and then opened and closed a store in Placerville which failed
  • In 1850, he opened a wholesale grocery store in Sacramento.
  • By 1955, Hopkins and Huntington opened a hardware and iron company in Sacramento and called it the Huntington Hopkins and Company.

SIGNIFIGANCE

  • Hopkins was an important because he was the thriftiest and trustworthest of the " big four" which caused the others to put their trust in him and part of the reason he was appointed as treasurer.
  • The trust people put on Mark Hopkins allowed the group and business around him to move more smoothly.

LEGACY

  • Mark and Mary Hopkins did not have any children.
  • Hopkins died without ever leaving a will behind.
  • After Mark’s death, his estate passed to Marry Hopkins.
  • The Mark Hopkins Hotel was built in its place in 1926.
  • The hotel is now known as InterContinental Mark Hopkins San Francisco.
