When the California Gold Rush first began, Mark Hopkins created the” "New England Mining and Trading Company", a group of 26 men each of whom invested $500 to purchase goods and ship them to California .
By 1849, he arrived in San Francisco and then opened and closed a store in Placerville which failed
In 1850, he opened a wholesale grocery store in Sacramento.
By 1955, Hopkins and Huntington opened a hardware and iron company in Sacramento and called it the Huntington Hopkins and Company.
Hopkins was an important because he was the thriftiest and trustworthest of the " big four" which caused the others to put their trust in him and part of the reason he was appointed as treasurer.
The trust people put on Mark Hopkins allowed the group and business around him to move more smoothly.
