SPORTS PSYCHOLOGY

  • The study of how psychology influences sports and physical activity.
  • Work to increase motivation, performance, and overall well-being
  • Work with pro athletes, coaches, olympians, and military.

MAJOR FOCUSES

  • Imagery: successfully performing a skill in an event
  • Motivation: external rewards (trophies) internal awards (sense of pride)
  • Attentional focus: ability to tune out distractions

WHAT SURPRISED US?

  • They also work with non athletes to get them in shape and improve their health
  • They work with military to keep them mentally strong during combat

  • That they work with Olympians
  • Wasn't a popular study until the 1980's
  • Athletes of all levels hire psychologists to give them a mental edge
