CARBOHYDRATE

  • Main source of energy for our bodies
  • 2 types; simple and complex
  • Simple carbohydrates give you short energy and come from foods like fruits and sweets.
  • Complex carbohydrates give you longer lasting energy and come from foods like bread, pasta, and cheese.

PROTEIN

  • Builds and repairs body and muscle tissue; cells
  • 2 types of proteins, incomplete and complete
  • Complete proteins come from meat such as eggs, fish, and steak
  • Incomplete proteins come from things that are not meat such as nuts, seeds, and beans.

FATS

  • Cushions and protects organs
  • Promotes healthy skin
  • 3 types, saturated, trans fat, and unsaturated.
  • Healthy fats are better for you and include peanut butter, nuts, and fish
  • Unhealthy fats are not as good for you and include things like donuts and cookies

VITAMINS

  • Helps us to obtain and use the energy from calories we take in
  • Improves immune system
  • Named by letters and other different names
  • Found mostly in fruits and vegetables

MINERALS

  • Regulates chemical reactions in our body
  • Minerals can be found in vegetables and include things like calcium, iron, and potassium.

WATER

  • Helps us to get nutrients through our blood
  • Controls our body temperature
  • Aids in waste removal
  • Found in fruits as well as plain water
