  • The flag was adopted August 21, 1979.
  • The six stars represent the mainland and the 5 islands.
  • The green symbolizes the natural resources, agriculture, and the jungles in the country.
  • Blue symbolizes the sea, which connects the main country to the islands.
  • White symbolizes peace.
  • Red symbolizes the blood shed by the fighters for independence.

  • Equatorial Guinea is located in west central Africa.
  • The country also has 28,000 square kilometers (10,830 sq miles).

CAPITALS AND MAIN CITIES

  • Equatorial Guinea's capital is Malabo.
  • The 10 largest cities in Equatorial Guinea are Bata, Malabo, Ebebiyin, Aconibe, Añisoc, Luba, Evinayong, Mongomo, Mikomeseng, and Rebola.

POPULATION

  • Equatorial Guinea has 722,254 people living there.
  • The different ethnic groups living there are Fang, Bubi, Ndowe, Annobon, Bujeba, and many others.
  • The density is 24.1/km2 (62.4/sq mi).

GEOGRAPHY

  • Equatorial Guinea is made up of its mainland and its 5 islands.
  • It is surrounded by Cameroon and Gabon.
  • Equatorial Guinea has mostly a tropical climate with distinct wet and dry seasons.
  • The mainland is a jungle enclave that rises from the narrow coastal mangrove swamps towards the forested African Plateau.

RELIGIONS

  • 93% of the population of Equatorial Guinea is Christianity.
  • There are predominantly Roman Catholic's in the population which is 87%.
  • The minority is Protestant (5%) and Islam (2%).

HOLIDAYS AND FESTIVALS

  • New Years Day is celebrated January 1 and they have a fireworks show and cultural tours.
  • The Africa Cup of Nations is held every 2 years with participation of 16 different nations.
  • The Malabo Hip Hop Festival is every year in December, performers in the hip hop community come all over from Africa to attend workshops and events with the hostesses.

  • Christmas Day has a lot of dancing, eating, and exchanging gifts.
  • Independence Day is Celebrated on October 12, they celebrate independence from the Spanish colonization.
  • Armed Forces is celebrated August 3rd where they celebrate the military. It is treated as a public holiday where the armed forces get to feast on food and drinks.

SPORTS

  • Equatorial Guinea has a men's and women's fùtbol team.
  • The country was chosen to host the 2008 Women's African Fùtbol Championship.
  • They were also chosen to host the African Cup of Nations with Gabon.
  • Equatorial Guinea first competed at the Olympics in 1984 and has sent athletes to compete in every Summer Olympic Games since then.
  • Their best Olympic athlete is Eric Moussambani, he is a swimmer.
  • They made their World Cup debut in 2002 in Korea/Japan, but could only get passed the first round. Same thing happened in 2006 in Germany, but they got passed the second round in 2010 in South Africa. And they beat Madagascar in the 2014 qualifiers.

  • Typical foods in Equatorial are chicken served in a peanut butter or a cream sauce with rice or boiled plantain.
  • Meat or fished grilled with crushed pumpkin seeds served in leaves.
  • Cassava is a staple food, often served with meat or fish.
  • Sweet potatoes, yams, and plantain are popular ingredients.

CLOTHING

  • Traditional clothing is rarely made for men.
  • The traditional women clothing for women are loosely worn dresses with different African patterns and a head scarf.
  • The traditional clothing that older women wear a simple, large piece of cotton over a blouse or a skirt.

LANDMARKS AND PLACES

  • If I were a tourist I would visit the Malabo Cathedral because most of the country is Catholic and so am I.
  • I would also visit the Museum of Modern Art because I think art is an important part of culture.
  • Finally I would visit Estadio de Bata because Bata is the largest city in the country and it is a fùtbol stadium and I like soccer.

FUN FACTS

  • It has the highest adult literacy rate of the entire Sub-Saharan Africa.
  • The highest point is Pico Basile at 3,008 miles on the island of Bioko.
  • The major industries are petroleum, fishing, sawmilling, and natural gas.
  • The main exports are methanol, timber, cocoa.
