SEATTLE - SAN DIEGO
We left Seattle on June 7 for a two-week road trip / camping trip / vacation.

SATURDAY

WE DEPARTED FOR A HOTEL IN MINING TERRITORY

HIGHLIGHTS:

  • Ultrasound in the morning
  • I have gallstones
  • Forgot to get my pain meds filled
  • Left anyway
  • Yreka!
The day we were supposed to leave, I ended up getting a CT scan and spending all day at the doctor because of suspected gallbladder problems. However, they couldn't get me in for an ultrasound until the following morning, so we left a day later than intended. I forgot to get my painkillers filled in case I had another attack on the road (but it turns out they don't help much anyway, so no big loss there).

SUNDAY

WE BRAVED THE HOT METHANE CLOUDS OF BAKERSFIELD

HIGHLIGHTS:

  • A beautiful drive through hills
  • An enthusiastic doctor in a parking lot
  • A hotel room with wifi I paid for
  • Wifi that did not work at all
  • The reek of horse piss from 11 pm - 8 am
The drive was pretty straightforward and pleasant, albeit hot. When we arrived at Motel 6, an enthusiastic old chap in the parking lot with a stethoscope around his neck informed us we'd checked into the hotel with the best deal along California. He insisted we check out the pool. We did not really have the energy or time to, but we wouldn't have anyway once the unexpected, gaggingly-strong horse pee winds came.

MONDAY

I BOUGHT COWBOY BOOTS AND WE CAMPED IN MALIBU
I spent a lot of time shopping for a bathing suit, too, since I foolishly left mine at home in Seattle. :\

HIGHLIGHTS

  • Malibu Creek State Park was nice
  • The showers were super cold
  • We raced the sun to get food
  • We snuggled under the stars...
  • ...under thick fog
It was our first night camping and it was great! We left to get dinner late enough we were worried about the gates closing to the park before we got back, and that was a bit scary but fun since everything worked out just fine.

TUESDAY

WE GOT OUR ASSES HANDED TO US BY THE OCEAN
Oh man, that rip current had it out for us.

HIGHLIGHTS

  • San Clemente State Beach was fun
  • We hit some rocks
  • The ocean broke my bathing suit
  • We roasted marshmallows (nom)
  • We used the rain cover on the tent
We were tumbled about quite a bit and came out with bloody legs, while I was having to hold my bathing suit up to cover my chest, but it's okay - it was still fun.

WEDNESDAY

WE HAD A BLAST IN SAN DIEGO

HIGHLIGHTS

  • Yummy sandwiches for lunch
  • Comfy hotel room with wifi
  • Played miniature golf
  • Went on a roller coaster (!)
  • Got sunburnt on the beach

THURSDAY

WE DROVE TO JOSHUA TREE... THEN OPTED OUT

HIGHLIGHTS

  • Pizza lunch with my bio-dad
  • Saw Joshua Tree and it was like 110°
  • Left Joshua Tree because, fuck that
  • Got beers with Ali and Marshall
  • Slept in a fancy hotel room in Redlands
I've only met up with my biological father twice since I was six or so (this was the second time). He was very happy to see me and took us by his place in Joshua Tree to check it out after getting pizza. Then we left to go hang out with some of my good friends from college, which was a blast.

FRIDAY

MY SISTER WAS IN AN ART SHOW

HIGHLIGHTS

  • Kyla was in an art show
  • Got dinner with my family
  • Remembered my mom drives me nuts
  • Found a couple of old toys of mine
  • Stayed at my mom's house for the night
Long story short, I love my mom, but putting up with her for more than 24 hours borders on masochism. But I found some of my old My Little Pony toys from the early 80's, so that's neat.

SATURDAY

MY FRIEND GOT HITCHED AND WE VISITED MY SISTER

HIGHLIGHTS

  • Went swimming
  • Went to Becca's reception
  • Went to Madison's for the night
  • Had a fun night in a dress
  • Gave my lightup finger toy to a kid
All the other kids had little lightup LED rings except for a three and a half-or-so year old so since I had one, I gave it to him so he wouldn't be left out of the fun. That was great until I guess some of the other kids started pestering him to give it to them? Lame.

SUNDAY

WE WENT TO THE REN FAIRE AND LOST MY WALLET
To make matters even more interesting, my mom and the owners of this Renaissance Faire (which my family worked at from 1999-2001) were involved in an epic and nasty lawsuit. I had to pick my wallet up from them, which was a bit awkward, but turned out alright - it was good to see they were more forgiving than my mom tends to be (she had a word or two about my going there to begin with).

HIGHLIGHTS

  • Saw a magician and a juggler
  • Hung out with Madison a bit
  • Had funnel cake
  • Tried to get Mina to trust us
  • Got my wallet back
My sister's cat was adorable and wanted to have nothing to do with either of us. Paul tried his best, but aside from a finger lick and a few hisses, she wouldn't interact with us.

MONDAY

WE WENT TO FUCKING DISNEYLAND

HIGHLIGHTS:

  • Went on all the (open) rides we wanted to
  • Paul got an embroidered hat
  • Hung out with Becca and Xiang
  • So many churros!!!
  • We had so, so much fun.
Space Mountain and Alice in Wonderland were closed. :( But I did the math and we averaged under $5 a ride for all the things we did under our ticket price.

TUESDAY

WE DROVE ALLLLL THE WAY PAST SAN JOSE

HIGHLIGHTS

  • Got sushi at a place with a drunk lady
  • Drove a whole lot
  • Got a bit grumpy
  • Had a gallbladder attack
  • Ended the night ok though :)
We were both tired and a little bummed out about leaving Disneyland, I think.

WEDNESDAY & THURSDAY

WE STAYED AT PATRICK'S POINT STATE PARK

HIGHLIGHTS

  • Camped for two wonderful nights
  • Beautiful sights
  • Agate beach
  • Stars at night

FRIDAY

  • Omg, sand dunes!!!

  • Forest, and then, SAND FOR DAYS
  • Our fire kept smoking at us
  • We put the rain cover up again

SATURDAY

WE DROVE BACK, BUT NOT IN TIME TO CATCH THE NUDES
The Fremont Solstice parade was going on when we were driving back, but we got caught up in such gridlock getting home that we were too late to catch it.

HIGHLIGHTS

  • The best road trip I've ever been on
  • The beach and the sun
  • Disneyland
  • Camping under the stars
  • Cold coin-operated showers
It seemed to last so long and be over too fast all at the same time.
