STORIES

  • Chapter 1(pg. 3-22)
  • "Day after day, night after night, he went from one Jewish house
  • to the next,telling his story…"
  • (Wiesel. 7)
I chose this Title for this part of the book because there had been people telling stories about what had been happening. They also get passed around like stories.
The picture I chose shows different religions and what happened. They are also stories that people tell. I thought it would fit in good because the book and Elie are religious and also consists of stories.
I chose this quote because it shows how people were going house to house telling people about what happened soon becoming stories.

Doubt

  • chapter 2 (pg.23-28)
  • "Look! Look at this fire! This terrible fire…There's
  • nothing there…She is hallucinating because she is thirsty, poor women."
  • (Wiesel,25)
I chose this title for this part of the book because there was a lot of doubt. Most of the time when someone said something they doubted it actually happened or is going on.
I chose this picture because it shows a sign sating entrance pointing to a sign saying no entry. It might bring doubt to someones mind like it did to mine.
I chose this quote because in this part of the book there was an old lady that kept on saying there was a fire but mo one saw it so they all were in doubt. Since they were in doubt they made exudes of why she would be saying that.

Marked

  • Chapter 3 (pg.29-46)
  • "Needles in hand, tattooed numbers on our left arms.
  • I became A-7713. From there on, I had no other name.marked."
  • (Wiesel,42)
For this part of the book I chose this title because they were all marked. They were marked by a tattoo or they were marked for ever by seeing terrible things. It made a park in their hearts and mind forever.
I chose this picture because when they brand cows they use branders which leaves a mark on them. In this case they marked the Jews with a number as their name.
I chose this quote because it shows how they were marking them with numbers as their names which left a mark on them.

treasure

  • chapter 4 (pg.47-65)
  • "I shall remove your crown, that's all."
  • (Wiesel,52)
I chose this name for this part of the book because Elie has a gold filling in some of his teeth and when the doctor finds it, it is like treasure to him.
I chose this picture because every time I think of treasure I think of a pirate and a treasures chest. It holds valuable expensive things, which at that time was anything gold, even the small gold filling in his tooth.
I chose this quote because when the doctor says crown it makes me think of an actual crown in a treasure chest. It also shows that the doctor wanted the "treasure" because it was valuable.

lost

  • chapter 5 (pg.66-84)
  • "My eyes had opened and I was alone, terribly alone in a world
  • without god, without man." (Wiesel,68)
I chose this name for this part of the book because Elie is feeling lost in this big world and feels like has lost everything.
I chose this picture because it shows a small stuffed animal lost in a big world. He has no one and might wonder if any one is wondering where he is or what is happening to him just like Elie. Also, in movies they show a small child drop and loose a stuffed animal and how the stuffed animal goes through a hard time but eventually they find it.
I chose this quote because it shows that Elie after so long just opens his eyes and realizes that he is lost/alone and has lost everything. God is no longer there for him and all the man around him are no longer men, they are corpses or act like animals.

cold souls

  • chapter 6 (pg. 85-97)
  • "These human waves were rolling forward and would have crushed me like
  • an ant." (Wiesel,87)
I chose this name for this part of the book because many parts in this part of the book were harsh. People were beating each other, people were dying, and guards were harsh too. Everyone acted like they had no heart or a cold soul.
I chose this picture because it shows an old twisted up tree and it's covered in snow. It represents how sometimes old things can be cold about many things.
I chose this quote because it tells how there were people running/marching towards him but they would not stop for anything. So if he had not moved they would have hurt him without caring.

empty

  • chapter 7 (pg.98-103)
  • "...our heads empty and heavy.."
  • (Wiesel,98)
I chose this name for the title of this part of the book because Elie and many other people feel empty inside and out. He feels like everything he has and used to have is empty and destroyed.
I chose this picture because the word empty makes me think of an abandoned house. It shows that there is nothing left but the marks that have been made.
I chose this quote because it shows how Elie felt about him self and other people around him. He felt like is brain was empty except for the marks that have been left there for the Holocaust.

fear

  • chapter 8 (pg.104-112)
  • "The old, familiar fear: not to lose him."
  • (Wiesel,104)
I chose this title for this part of the book because Elie talks a lot about how he is scared for what has to come and also talks about having the fear of losing his father.
I chose this picture because to me it represents fear. many people have a fear of clowns, but in this case Elie ha a fear of losing his father or never seeing him again.
I chose this quote because it talks about Elie talking about the only far that always pops up into his head: losing his father.

nothing

  • chapter 9 (pg.113-115)
  • "...nothing mattered to me anymore."
  • "(Wiesel,113)
I chose this name for this part of the book because Elie's father dies and he now feels like he has nothing. He may be free but if he doesn't have a father, mother, siblings, family, relatives, house, money and many more things, what does he have:nothing.
I chose this picture because the word nothing makes me think of homeless people and how they have to go through life with nothing.
I chose this quote because it shows that Elie felt like he had nothing anymore even though he was finally free.

the end

These were all the chapter names I thought would represent the different breaks in the book.
