JAPANESE TEA CEREMONY

THE TEA CEREMONY

  • Is also called "The Way of Tea"
  • Its been around Japanese culture for a very long time
  • And must be done through all the correct steps

THERE ARE FORMAL AND INFORMAL TEA GATHERINGS

  • The informal gatherings are called "chakai"
  • Chakai involves a thin tea and a light meal

THE FORMAL GATHERINGS

  • Are called "chaji"
  • They involve a full course meal along with thick green tea
  • And sometimes even light tea to come after the thick tea

TO TEACH THEM THE PROPER WAY TO MAKE AND SERVE THE TEA

PEOPLE CAN HOLD THE GATHERS JUST ABOUT ANYWHERE

  • As long as it has a flat surface to make the tea at
  • There are rooms made just food tea gatherings they are called"Chashitsu"
  • Or you can keep it simple and just have it picnic style

Thick and thin tea are normally made with the best tea leaves

Historically the tea leaves used were the packing leaves in the tea urn

The tea is made with with warm water, green tea powder and tea leaves

THE EQUIPMENT CONSISTS OF

  • Chakin (a hemp cloth put down before making the tea)
  • Tea bowl
  • Tea caddy
  • Tea scoop
  • And a tea whisk (made of bamboo)
