First off, happiness is achieved through positive thinking. If someone thinks happy thoughts and makes the best out of a bad situation, the result would be a happy person. The article "Happiness is Cheap" states, "To experience happiness, we must accept that the volume at which we feel happy moves up and down, but is never muted." This means that when people are happy, they do not always stay happy and their level of happiness can change. At one moment, they may be happy, but, at the next, they may be sad. However, what this quote is saying, is that the "volume" is never muted, meaning that the happiness is never gone. When people think positively they achieve happiness, even if it is not always at the "volume" they want. This further proves that happiness is not bought, but achieved through positive thinking.
