• He was supported by a legion of Red Shirts- young Italian democrats
• He and his red shirts used the revolutions for a democratic uprising
• He failed at first
• He then lead an army of red shirts and liberated Sicily and Naples
• but then he failed again and Italy was unified

Camillo di Cavour

• He used the tools of realpolitik
• United Italy under the crown of Sardinia
• He also beat Garibaldi when he was liberating places
• He unified Italy a second time

STEPS AND EVENTS

• Mazzini called Italian patriots to join to spread his ideas
• They try to rebel against Austria and failed
• Cavour unified Italy under Sardinia
• Italy kicks Austria out and wants to annex with Sardinia
• Garibaldi liberates places but then he supported unifying
