PLUMEN 001 BY SAMUEL WILKINSON

Energy saving light bulb uses 80% less energy than the traditional incandescent light bulb.

Plumen has made this bulb more attractive with a better quality of light.

LEIMU BY MAGNUS PETTERSEN FOR IITTALA

With Walnut Grey Design the emphasis is on ‘good design’ and quality of life.

Concerned with notions of essentialism, emotionalism, functionalism and the aesthetic in design.

Materials are important when considering great lighting. They include: concrete, wood, glass, steel, brass, copper, porcelain and leather.

There is an interconnected emotional play between what something looks like, how it works and the way in which it interacts with the individual.

EMOTIONAL DESIGN

  • Aesthetic
  • Honest
  • Useful
  • Understandable
  • Long-lasting
From Dieter Rams ten principles for good design.

Aesthetic: design affects our person & our well being.

Honest: does not attempt to manipulate with false promises.

Useful: functional & psychological. Design should not be a distraction.

Understandable: clarity; the product is self-explanatory.

Long-lasting: avoids being fashionable; lasts many years & is not throwaway.

EMOTIONAL DESIGN

  • Relational
  • Engaging
  • Personable
  • Enjoyable
  • Narrative

'UP' BY TAF FOR MUUTO

Lighting is an often overlooked aspect of many interiors, yet one that is pivotal to an aesthetic environment.

One of the most important elements of any interior space, lighting must be aesthetic, useful and unobtrusive.

BULLET BY STUDIO ITAI BAR-ON

There is, for me, nothing more soulless than a room with a length of lighting cable and a naked bulb drooping from the ceiling. That said, add a rice paper shade and we have the definitive example of lighting blandness.

FOSCARINI BINIC TABLE LAMP

It is better to consider lighting in a holistic context.

Lighting is not simply an added extra or afterthought, but rather it is integral to the balance and harmony of a space.

'OO' BY SVERRE UHNGER

Lighting's purpose is a functional one, from lighting an entire room to accenting one particular area.

I believe lighting should have an honest quality – I want to trust it and put my faith in its ability to fulfil its role.

MILK LAMP BY NORM FOR &TRADITION

I favour lighting that is timeless, clean and well crafted.

My own particular penchant is for beautifully discerning table lamps that work equally well when placed on the floor.

FORM US WITH LOVE PLUG LAMP

Lamps should have their own respective personality, poise and a certain urbanity. Whether illuminated or switched off, they provide an emotional charge.

When a lamp is able to foster emotion in the individual, it is undoubtedly an example of good design.

FRANK TABLE LAMP BY OLIVER HRUBIAK

I enjoy lighting that dazzles with its allure and elegance, rather than its glitter and glare.

STUDIOILSE W084T2 FOR WÄSTBERG

Lighting creates the mood in a space. Its setting, position and incandescence cannot be overlooked.

Too often people buy a light without consideration for its place in a room or its intended use. The lure of cheap uplighters and lamps has in many ways caused people to make impulse lighting purchases for their homes. As a result I have witnessed numerous lighting misfortunes across the land.

SLIGHTLY AWKWARD LAMP BY EVAN CLABOTS

I am comfortable with a light taking centre stage in a room, so long as it performs its intended function without fanfare and unnecessary drama.

CLOCHE LAMP BY LARS BELLER FJETLAND

The finest lights, in my most urbane opinion, are those that fit simply within a space, having little, if any, pretence.

They interact harmoniously with the surrounding space, objects and furnishings.

SKOG (FOREST) BY CAROLINE OLSSON

We take the lighting of a space for granted. With the flick of a switch or touch of a button, it’s instantaneous gratification. That warm glow imparts a strong feeling of security.

But lighting can also be fun!

COMPANION LIGHTS FOR DISCIPLINE

Light is brilliant, the creator of moments and ideas, both expressive and freeing, intelligent and unencumbered. We should therefore show it off to the best of its ability.

“You cannot understand good design if you do not understand people; design is made for people.” (Dieter Rams).
