Quadratic Functions

Parabola

- A curve where any point is at an equal distance from a fixed point and a fixed straight line.

Axis of symmetry

-A vertical line that divides the parabola into two congruent halves.

Quadratic equation

-Is any equation having the form, where x represents an unknown, and a,b,c represents numbers which is not equal 0.

Standard form of quadratic

y = ax2 + bx + c, where a, b, and c are real numbers and a = 0.

Vertex form of quadratic

y = a( x-h)2 + k, where (h,k) is the vertex of the parabola.

Zero product property

-The Zero Product Property states that if ab = 0, then either a = 0 or b = 0, or both a and b are 0.

Zeros of function

- A zero of a function is an input value that produces an output of zero.

Factoring

-Finding what to multiply to get an expression.

Difference of squares

-Two terms that are squared and separated by a subtraction sign that can be factored into (a+b) (a-b).

Perfect square trinomial

- The product of two binomials that are the same.

Quadratic formula

- A method used to find the roots of a quadratic equation.

Discriminant

-Helps tell you the number of real solutions to a quadratic equation.

Imaginary number

-A number that when squared gives a negative result.

Complex number

-A combination of a real and an imaginary number in the form a + bi.
