NATIVE AMERICANS

  • They would work on farms and grow; corn,pole beans, squash, and tobacco
  • They would tell stories (tradition)
  • Catawban homes were made of sapling frames covered with bark or mats made of grass (wigwams)
  • Traded furs, deerskins.....eventually Europeans tricked them into slavery

EUROPEANS

  • Spanish brought African Slaves work on plantations and mines.
  • Spanish explored mostly for gold
  • English sailed along North America claiming land for the King
  • Spain founded San Miguel de Gualdape
  • English founded first permanent settlement (Charles Town) in 1670

AFRICANS

  • Africans were enslaved and worked on plantations
  • Slave codes were to prevent another revolt after the stono rebellion
  • Stono rebellion was the biggest revolt by African slaves
  • Some slaves were able to purchase their freedom if they had special talents

ECONOMY

  • Rice was the main cash crop that made the most money (Carolina gold)
  • Indigo became became a common cash crop...was a blue dye
  • Practiced mercantilism which caused more money to come in

GOVERNMENT

  • Proprietary government is a government ruled by a group of lords proprietors
  • Royal government was one that was ruled by a king
  • Proprietors were thrown out because they did not provide much protection
