  • The US won in the battle of Okinawa.
  • It was one of the bloodiest battles of WW2.
  • Atomic bomb was helpful during this battle.
  • Code name was operation Iceberg.

  • Who: US & Japan
  • When: April 1, 1945-June 23,1945
  • Where: Okinawa Island
  • Why,How,What: They needed to capture it to advance to Japan

INJURED AND KILLED & WEAPONS

  • JAPAN- 77,000/130,000
  • US casualties- 65,000
  • U.S deaths- 14,000/287,000
  • Weapons: Atomic Bomb, hand grenades, tanks, flamethrower, etc.

THE BATTLE WOULD HAVE BEEN FOUGHT DIFFERENTLY

  • If the atomic bomb hadn't been used, the US would have lost many more troops and the Typhoon that hit Japan a few months later would have damaged military supplies probably causing US to lose the battle.

  • About 65,000 Japanese troops on the island.
  • Okinawa is the largest of the Ryukyus islands at the southern tip of Japan.
  • The Americans also lost 36 ships. The Japanese lost 16 ships.
