DHARMA

  • One often sees dharma translated as religion, duty, or even righteousness
  • "dharma" comes from the Sanskrit root dhri, meaning to "uphold" or to "sustain."
  • is one of the most important themes within Hinduism
  • holds strong significantly in the historical perspective, but it also is important in today’s society
  • Hinduism wouldn't exist without dharma

KARMA

  • Means "action"
  • Means actions that effect ones fortune in this life and the next
  • Is the idea the life is governed by "cause and effect"
  • regarded as a fundamental law of nature
  • Significant because it effects where you go after you die

REINCARNATION

  • Hinduism & Buddhism The eternal cycle of birth, suffering, death, and rebirth
  • Says souls are eternal
  • Passage from the Gita- "Worn out garments are shed by the body; worn out bodies are shed by the dweller."
  • If you live a good life you will reincarnate into something good
  • Significant because it gives people hope their is life after death

THE VEDAS

  • Most significant piece of scripture for Hinduism
  • Written in 1200 BCE to 100 CE
  • For Hindus, the Veda is a symbol of unchallenged authority and tradition
  • Religion said in it is not particularly used in modern times

THE CASTE SYSTEM

  • process of placing people in occupational groups
  • ranked in hierarchical order
  • Mahatma Gandhi made the lower castes untouchable
  • 4 levels- Brahmins, Kshatriyas, vaisyas, and Sudra being the lowest
  • This is significant because it divides the social standings
