FACTS ABOUT GRAHAM

  • He was Scottish
  • His father was a textile manufactuer
  • His father wanted him to be a part of the church of Scotland
  • Worked for two years at Eninburgh University
  • Appointed professor of chemistry at Anderson's College

WHEN WAS GRAHAM'S LAW DISCOVERED?

IT WAS DISCOVERED IN THE 1830'S

REAL LIFE USES

  • Used in making bombs
  • Oxygen transport in the lungs
  • Respiration
  • Finding out what an unknown gas is
  • -does this by determing density and molar mass

EXAMPLE

PROBLEM #1: IF EQUAL AMOUNTS OF HELIUM AND ARGON ARE PLACED IN A POROUS CONTAINER AND ALLOWED TO ESCAPE, WHICH GAS WILL ESCAPE FASTER AND HOW MUCH FASTER?

SOLUTION

  • Set rate1 = He = x Set rate2 = Ar = 1
  • The molecular weight of He = 4.00 The molecular weight of Ar = 39.95
  • r1 over r2 = √MM2 over √MM1
  • x / 1 = √(39.95 / 4.00)
  • x = 3.16 times as fast.
