WHAT IS HEART DISEASE?

  • Also known by the name 'coronary heart disease'
  • Generally refers to conditions that involve narrowed or blocked blood vessels
  • Can lead to a heart attack, chest pain, or stroke
  • Other conditions can affect your heart's muscle, valves, or beating rhythm
  • One of several cardiovascular diseases

WHAT ARE THE SYMPTOMS?

  • Chest pain or discomfort (angina)
  • Shortness of breath
  • Squeezing of the heart
  • Fatigue with activity (exertion)
  • Feeling of indigestion or heart burn

WHAT ARE THE RISK FACTORS?

  • Having a family history of early heart disease
  • High blood pressure and cholesterol
  • Diabetes
  • Smoking
  • Being physically inactive or overweight

TREATMENT

  • There are variations of treatment
  • Lifestyle changes: quit smoking, diet, exercise
  • Medications: ACE inhibitors, beta blockers, calcium channel blockers
  • Surgery: two main surgeries are CABG and PGI
