EARLY LIFE

  • Samuel lived from 1567-1635. He died on Christmas Day.
  • Samuel was born and raised in Brouage, France.
  • Samuel learned about navigation from his father who was a sea captain.
  • His first voyages were with his uncle to Spain.
  • He was educated and studied cartography, navigation, astronomy, and math.

EXPLORATION

  • He went to Canada to explore for the king.
  • From 1601-1603 he was a geographer for the king.
  • In 1603 he explored the St. Lawrence river.
  • He explored Niagara Falls and wrote about it.
  • People later read his story and visited Niagara Falls.

  • In 1608 he established a fur trading post in Canada.
  • He named his settlement Quebec.
  • Champlain and his men built a fort.
  • Only 8 of the 24 settlers survived cause of the cold winter.
  • He became friends with Algonquin and Huron Indians.

  • To create a route to Asia to trade directly.
  • To find a place for fur trading and settlement.
  • To find a place for the French colonists to settle.
  • To make a map of North America.
  • To connect Cuba, Panama, and Mexico.

RESULTS OF EXPLORATION

  • Samuel mapped most of Northeastern North America.
  • He founded Quebec and New France. That is why he is known as the Father of New France.
  • Samuel mapped the Great Lakes.
  • He lead the Quebec settlement for years until the English attacked in 1629.
  • He returned to France until a French-British peace treaty in 1632.

  • May 1608 Champlain established Quebec City.
  • April 1620 Champlain is appointed governor of New France.
  • Dec 1635 Champlain died in Quebec.

INTERESTING FACTS

  • He married a 12 year old and later named an island after her.
  • 1609 he had his first battle with the Iroquois and a arrow split his ear.
  • Champlain was the first person to discuss the Panama Canal.
  • Little is known about his life as a young person.
