PRESENTATION OUTLINE

PLATE TECTONICS

PIECES OF EARTH‘S LITHOSPHERE THAT ARE IN SLOW CONSTANT MOTION

CAUSE OF PLATE MOVEMENT 1

CONVECTION CURRENTS IN THE MANTLE CAUSE PLATE MOVEMENT.

Convection currents are currents that transfers heat through a liquid.

CAUSE OF PLATE MOVEMENT 2

SLAB PULL

A slab pull is gravity pulling on the end of a tectonic plate. It is pulled down into Earth.

CAUSE OF PLATE MOVEMENT 3

RIDGE PUSH

Ridge push- New less dense crust forming at divergent plate boundaries pushes older crust out of the way.

DIVERGENT PLATE BOUNDARY

TWO TECTONIC PLATES THAT ARE MOVING AWAY FROM EACH OTHER

Divergent--Rift Valley-Álfagjá rift valley in southwest Iceland, that is part of the boundary between the Eurasian and North American continental tectonic plates.

DIVERGENT--MID OCEAN RIDGE

LOMONOSOV RIDGE

Lomonosov Ridge is an unusual underwater ridge of continental crust in the Arctic Ocean.

Convergent Boundary--- Tectonic plates in the lithosphere move toward one another and collide

OCEAN VS CONTINENT CONVERGENCE

TRENCH WITH VOLCANIC ARC

OCEAN VS OCEAN CONVERGENCE

ISLAND ARCS

CONTINENT VS CONTINENT CONVERGENCE

MOUNTAIN RANGE

Subduction zone-- A collision between two of Earth's tectonic plates, where one sinks in the mantle below the other plate

Oceanic trench-- a narrow steep-sided depression in the Earth's oceanic crust, usually above a subduction zone

MARIANA TRENCH

DEEPEST TRENCH IN THE WORLD

TRANSFORM BOUNDARIES

TECTONIC PLATES SLIDE PAST EACH OTHER

RESULT FROM A TRANSFORM BOUNDARY

EARTHQUAKES
