REMBRANDT'S NIGHT WATCH

STILL INFLUENCES OUR TIME
This is my thesis statement. It is OK to reword it provided you are still making a connection to modern times.

Untitled Slide

- This is Rembrandt's painting.
- One of the most famous paintings of the Dutch Golden Age.
- It is huge at over 11' x 14'!
- The real name is The Company of Captain Banning Cocq and Lieutenant Willem van Ruytenburch Preparing to March Out.
- Finished 1642
- Rembrandt paid 1600 guilders - each person paid 100 each - some mad not shown full face!

"One of Germany's most well-known and influential artists, Anselm Kiefer, was invited by the Rijksmuseum to create a work inspired by The Night Watch."

- First half of long quote
- This work is displayed opposite the original in the museum
- Inspirations don't always look like the original
- Knowing there is a connection the viewer tries to find it adding another layer to the art.

"Kiefer's artwork for the Night Watch Gallery belongs to a long tradition among artists of creating work inspired by their predecessors. In this dialog between past and present, artworks are seen in a new light and given new meaning."
- Art Daily

Quote continues....
The idea of dialog - past/present

Untitled Slide

Same
- structured in three parts like original
- the upsides own flowers like lances

Different
- Sculpture not paint
- Abstract not realistic

Untitled Slide

- Oil painting by Vladimir Zunuzin with same title
- easier to make connection, impressionist piece that follows the general composition and color and style adds to the sense of action

Untitled Slide

Images have meaning, like words

Untitled Slide

Disney's Donald Duck gets some added class by being in a masterpiece and it also serves Walt's mission of improving America's cultural literacy.

Untitled Slide

Even the use of a flash mob to advertise the reopening of the museum that houses this work.

Not only fun, but action packed - one of the characteristics making the painting an art icon.

This does not need to be as formal as the printed Works Cited you will hand in.
