RED SCARE

  • A panic throughout the U.S.
  • Started in 1919, when Russia became communist.

PALMER RAIDS

  • J. Edgar Hoover and Palmer raided private/public places.
  • They tried to remove all foreign radicals (communists, socialists and anarchists)
  • They failed to prove any kind of conspirancy,

SACCO AND VANSETTI

  • Sacco and Vansetti were charged with the murder of two people.
  • Even though the evidence was on their side they were still sentenced to death

KU KLUX KLAN

  • An all white nativist group.
  • Hated all foreigners especially African Americans.

AUTO INDUSTRY

  • During the Coolidge Era the auto industry sprouted.
  • It made life easier with more jobs, and efficient transportation.
  • People were now opening car shops
  • People could live further away from their workplace

HENRY FORD

  • The creator of Ford automobiles
  • Created an airplane as we'll.
  • Created the assembly line

ASSEMBLY LINE

  • Created by Henry Ford
  • Made putting together cars a lot quicker and easier
  • Everybody was assigned to one part opposed to a whole car
  • After a while people got really good at their position and sped up the process

PROHIBITION

  • Against alcohol
  • Started by the Anti-Saloon League

18TH AMENDMENT

  • Made drinking purchasing making and selling alcohol illegal
  • Established to stop crime

21ST AMENDMENT

  • Removed the 18th amendment
  • Only amendment to be state ratified

ORGANIZED CRIME

  • With the loss of alcohol organized crime was picked up
  • Al Capone was a gangster and a bootlegger.
  • He got his mob to kill the other competition
  • Was put in jail for not paying taxes

SCOPES TRIAL

  • Law against teaching evolution in schools in Tennessee.
  • American Civil Liberties Union promised to defend teachers who did
  • John T. Scopes challenged the law

C. DARROW

  • John T. Scopes attorney
  • Most popular lawyer of his time

W.J. BRYAN

  • Special prosecutor
  • Presidential nominee

DECISION

  • John Scopes lost and was fined $100
  • Over turned on a technicality that the Bible can be interpreted in different ways

HARLEM RENAISSANCE

  • A movement that featured music, art, literature, politics, ideas, influenced by African Americans
  • Marcus Garvey thought all African Americans should go back to Africa

JAZZ

  • The most influential music of this time
  • Started most modern music
  • Created in New Orleans

L. HUGHES

  • Leader in the Harlem Renaissance
  • Created jazz poetry

TIN PAN ALLEY

  • Best recording studio in New York
  • Place where the most popular artists met up to make music

POPULAR

  • People started listening to the radio
  • Read newspaper more
  • Kids went to school
  • Important for kids to have fun
