Humans have lived in the Pacific Northwest for over 15,000 years. During this time many tribes emerged and made this place their home.

There are two main kinds of Northwest Indians, the Coastal tribes such as the Chinook, Suquamish, and the Puyallup.

And the Plateau tribes, such as the Nez Perce, Palouse, and Yakima tribes.

FEATURES OF COSTAL TRIBES
These tribes lived west of the Cascades.
They had a very rich diet of fish, marine mammals, big game and berries.
They also would use giant dugout canoes to go whaling.

They lived in large, cedar long houses.
Unlike the Plateau tribes, the coastal tribes were not nomadic.
They traveled mostly by water in dugout canoes, using them to transport goods.

Features of The Plateau Tribes
These tribes lived east of the Cascades.
They had to travel great distances to gather food and water.
The plateau tribes were typically larger then coastal tribes.

When Europeans arrived, they brought horses. These horses were later captured and breed by Plateau tribes.

The tools used by native Americans were rather primitive. This changed when Settlers came, both Indians and Settlers would trade goods. The Indians would give beautiful beads and the Settlers traded guns and cloth.

However the pioneers also spelled trouble for the natives. They fought over land and many Indians went onto reserves.

RELIGION
Both plateau and coastal tribes believed in Animism.
Animism is based on the belief that different objects are possessed by good and bad spirts.
The spiritual leader of the tribe is the shaman or medicine man.

There were many different ceremonies, from burials, marriage, and coming of age. The tribe would dress up and perform ornate dances.
