PAGETS DISEASE

CAUSE

• Osteoclasts more active osteoblasts
• Osteoblasts overreact, make excessive bone
• Has irregular mosaic pattern-large dense bones
• Genetics and viruses may play a role.

SYMPTOMS

• Most don't have symptoms
• Can include bone pain deformed bones
• And fractures.
• Depends on location; skull=headaches,dizziness
• Spine: nerve damage and leg pain, numbness

DIAGNOSE

• Bone x-ray
• Blood test: above levels of alkaline phosphatase
• Base on med history,physical exam, bone X-ray
• Lab test and possible bone scan

TREATMENT

• Meds that slow breakdown of bone tissue
• Pain relievers
• Treatments to prevent complication
• Surgery to replace damage from disease(hip, leg)
