PANAMA

BALBOA AVENUE

  • Balboa Avenue is located in the capital city of Panama
  • Has gorgeous views of the Bay of Panama

EL CARMEN CHURCH

  • The church is one of the most beautiful & most visited church in Panama by tourists.
  • It is in the heart of Panama City
  • One of the most treasured religious icons in Panama
  • This church is the only Gothic architectural style building in the country.
  • This structure was built by the Carmelites which have been in Panama since 1940.

GOLDEN ALTAR

  • Made of carved wood and is covered in gold flake
  • Commonly known in Spanish as the "Altar de Oro"
  • Was originally located in a church in "Old Panama."

PANAMA CANAL

  • Operating since 1914
  • Considered one of the wonders of the world
  • This fifty-mile waterway transports ships

BRIDGE OF THE AMERICA'S

  • This 5,007-foot-long arch bridge spans the Pacific entrance to the Panama Canal
  • Connects both North and South America
  • Serves as an important part of the InterAmerican Highway

PANAMANIAN DISHES

BREAKFAST

  • Hojaldras- doughnuts sprinkled with sugar
  • Tortillas- flat pancakes made of corn flour, topped with eggs, cheese, or beans
  • Arepas- made of corn flour & stuffed or topped with eggs, cheese, or beans
  • Gallo pinto - "spotted rooster", made of rice, beans & usually pork (or beef, chicken or mixed seafood)

STARTERS, SNACKS, & SIDE DISHES

  • Empanadas- pastry filled with meat, cheese, potato or vegetables. Sometimes beef or shrimp is also offered.
  • Tamales- corn dough rolls with pockets stuffed with chicken or pork, wrapped in banana leaves and boiled
  • Chicharrones- fried or roasted pork fat and skin
  • Patacones, tajadas- patacones are fried green plantains, salted; tajadas are baked with cinnamon
  • Carimañolas - fried rolls stuffed with pureed yuca, meat, vegetables and hard-boiled eggs

SEAFOOD & FISH

  • Ceviche- mixture of raw fish, marinated in lime juice, with onion & coriander
  • Corvina- locally caught sea bass, fried or baked, served whole usually with lime or lemon

MAIN DISHES

  • Arroz con pollo- Slow cooked chicken with vegetables & spices, served with rice
  • Ropa Vieja- literally "old clothes"; made of beef and tomato sauce, served with rice
  • Sancocho- an extremely popular local stew, usually made with chicken vegetables, tomatoes & coriander

DESSERTS

  • Pastel de tres leches- Cake soaked in evaporated milk, condensed milk, & cream
  • Raspados- ice topped with sweet syrup and condensed milk
  • Flans- egg custard with caramelized sauce
  • Cocadas- A light biscuit-like dessert made from shredded coconut, eggs & sugar
