In most cases, the cause of cleft lip and cleft palate is unknown. These conditions cannot be prevented.
Symptoms arise from the opening in the mouth. They include difficulty speaking and feeding.
Most cases of cleft lip and cleft palate are noticed right away at birth and don't require special tests for diagnosis.

Surgery restores normal function with minimal scarring. If needed, speech therapy helps correct speaking difficulties.
