Educating, Inspiring and Empowering Students
Elk River School District mission - "educate, inspire and empower our diverse learners, to shape their futures, to accomplish their dreams and to contribute positively to local and global communities.

Problem

All students are not participating in the Accelerated Reader program
Our school tries to reward kids for reading books at their "level" by allowing them to take AR (Accelerated Reader) quizzes when they finish a book. They receive points depending on how many questions they answer correctly. They can then spend their points at the school store. The problem is some kids don't care about the points, and teachers don't count the points as part of their grade, so they choose not to read.

Inspiring kids to read

one electronic book at a time
One major goal of our school is to motivate kids to read. Our district has decided that in order to keep kids inspired to read we need to start making electronic books a choice for students. We are hoping that more kids will want to read if they are able to read from their personalized devices.

Taking the Initiative

  • School staff realize a need to get kids excited about reading
  • School asks district for funds to start an e-book collection
  • Media specialist decides which books will become available first
  • Teachers show students how to download e-books on their devices
  • Letter sent home to have parents reinforce the use of e -books

Why e-books?

  • Multiple books in one place
  • No losing or damaging
  • Most students already have devices
  • Enlarge font, highlight, take notes
  • Speaks and pronounces words out loud

E-books are on the rise

  • Overall sales of e-books were up 40.7% from 2011 to 2012
  • 2010 - 25% read an e-book. 2012 - 46% read one.
  • Total sales from e-books rose from 7% to 17% in just one year
  • 40.7% of schools  are looking at implementing BYOD
  • E-reading is on the rise while print reading is down

I chose this article because it had a lot of information about using e-books in schools. This article did a nice job comparing the trends over the past few years in e-book usage amongst kids.

goals for students

  • Become excited to read
  • Have a desire to read for pleasure
  • Become more fluent readers
  • Participation in Accelerated Reader
  • Create life long readers

How will we know if we succeed?

  • Librarian keeps track of student e-book activity
  • AR reports showing amount read by each student
  • Accelerated Reader program tracks reading scores
  • DIBELS measures fluency and accuracy
  • NWEA and MCA spring score comparison from the past year
Teachers are able to monitor students reading level by taking what is called a starz test. We can also track the amount a student has read through our Accelerated Reader program. Kids take quizzes after finishing a book and receive points for correct answers. I use AR points a s part of the kids reading grade as well.

We also have DIBELS (Dynamic Indicators of Basic Early Literacy Skills) reading fluency testing throughout the school year to make sure kids are improving on their fluency. If they are not, teachers and assistants pull kids out and progress monitor until student reaches grade level.

We also use a lot of data at our school and we can compare a multitude of reading assessments to previous years to ensure student growth.
