  • Basal Ganglia

WHERE DID IT GET ITS NAME

  • Dr James Parkinson
  • Described as "shaking palsy"
  • Also known as Parkinsonism

WHAT IS DIFFERENT IN THE NERVOUS SYSTEM

  • Dopaminergic neurons
  • Lewy bodies
  • Lighter substantia nigra
  • Can't carry out actions

WHAT CAUSES IT AND HOW IS IT CLASSIFIED

  • Genetic or environmental
  • Degenerative
  • Not preventable

WHO IS MOST LIKELY AFFECTED BY IT

  • Late fifties and sixties
  • Caucasians
  • Average age of 59

PROGNOSIS

  • Life-long
  • Worsens over time
  • Is life-threatening
  • Will not be able to control with drugs or treatment
  • Final symptoms of hallucinations and dementia

TREATMENT AND HOW IT AFFECTS THE PATIENT

  • Levadopa and selegiline
  • Treatment helps for first 5-10 years
  • Exercise, nutrition, and physical therapy
  • Surgery
  • No cure

DIAGNOSIS

  • Look at symptoms
  • Test to check for diseases with similar symptoms
  • Can be diagnosed when already dead

SYMPTOMS

  • Tremor
  • Altered Posture
  • Slowness of Movement
  • Muscle rigidity
  • Etc.
