WHAT IS IT?

WHY DOES IT HAPPEN?

  • Idiopathic (unknown cause)
  • Environmental factors
  • Genetic Mutation
  • Combination of both

WHAT IS HAPPENING

  • Death of nerve cells
  • Dopamine isn't produced
  • Result is Parkinson's

SYMPTOMS

  • Tremors
  • Loss of strength (Slower)
  • Rigidty
  • Dementia (higher risk)
  • Sleep, Balance, Speech, etc.

CALCIUM

  • High calcium levels
  • Cell death in the Substantia nigra
  • Oxidative stress
  • Cav 1,3

  • Defects in synaptic transmission
  • Dopamine should cross synapse
  • In Parkinson's, not enough cross

TREATMENT

  • No cure
  • Calcium channel blockers
  • Relieve and slow progression

CONCLUSION

  • Death of dopamine producing cells
  • High calcium levels
  • Low dopamine levels
  • Parkinson's symptoms start
  • Worse with time, but doesnt kill
