PRESENTATION OUTLINE

PARMENIDES

"TO THINK AND TO BE IS THE SAME THING"

PARMENIDES BELIEFS

  • He was a metaphysical monist
  • He had three paths of inquiry
  • "Either it is or it is not"-parmenides

THE PATH OF PERSUASION

  • Every thing is as it is, it is impossible for it not to be
  • He means that it is impossible for anything we see to be not real
  • It goes along with objective truth

THE PATH WHICH IS WHOLLY UNTHINKABLE

  • Parmenides believed that you could not know what is not
  • "It is not and it necessarily must not be"-Parmenides
  • You could not point out what is not there

THE PATH OF MORTALS

  • It restrains your thought from the path of inquiry
  • Nothing can come from nothing
  • It must fully be or be not at all

MY THOUGHTS

  • I Think Parmenides is a very open minded philosopher
  • I believe you could say Parmenides moulded Plato
  • Parmenides was a great teacher
