DEFINITION

CAUSES

  • Abnormal electrical pathway in the heart could be inherited
  • Heart surgery in the upper chambers
  • High levels of heart medicine digoxin
  • Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease
  • Heart failure, pneumonia, or metabolic problems

SYMPTOMS

  • Lightheadedness
  • Chest pain
  • Palpitation
  • Anxiety
  • Shortness of breath

RISK FACTORS

  • Occurs in women more than men
  • Ages 20-30
  • Anxious, under stress, physically fatigued, or hyperactive thyroid
  • Excess caffeine or alcohol use
  • Respiratory illness

COMPLICATIONS

  • Heart might not get enough blood
  • Heart attack
  • Heart failure
