What are participles?

  • They are verbs that are made into adjectives
  • There are three main types
  • Perfect Passive
  • Future Active
  • Present Active

Perfect Passive

  • Translated: Having been ___ed
  • has 1/2 endings, changes gender
  • is made by the 4th principle part
  • EX Amatus, amata, amatum-
  • EX having been loved

Future Active

  • Describes what noun will do in future
  • translated about to ____
  • 4th principle part + UR- US
  • EX Amaturus, amatura, amaturum
  • EX about to love

PRESENT ACTIVE

  • describes noun as doing something
  • translated _____ing
  • infinitive - RE +NS
  • EX amans
  • EX loving

Ablative Absolute

  • Participle+noun: both in ablative case
  • usually in beginning got sentence
  • tell circumstances of rest of sentence

Translation

  • Translation never starts with noun or participle
  • Uses a SWWAB word:
  • Since, When, While, After, Because
  • EX Puero legante, ridet saepissime
  • While the boy is reading, he laughs often
