PAUL EHRLICH

March 14, 1854 - August 20, 1915

EARLY LIFE

  • Born: March 14, 1854 in Upper Silesia, Germany
  • Son of Ismar Ehrlich and wife Rosa
  • Born into a Jewish family prominent in business & industry
  • Of Jewish religions but did not focus on Jewish customs
  • Developed interest in his youth years staining chemical dyes

EHRLICH'S GREATEST ACHIEVEMENT

  • Discovered the first arsenic drug to treat syphillis
  • Actually looking to cure a sleeping disorder but found syphillis cure
  • Studied 100's of arsenic drugs and by the 606th one, it worked
  • The 606th drug was called Salvarsan
  • The drug is nicknamed "606"

EDUCATION

  • Attended universities including Bresiau,Strasbourg,Freiburg,& Lepizig
  • A pioneer in chemotherapy, hematology, and immunology
  • Received his doctorate of medicine in 1878
  • Engaged in theory and practice of staining animal tissues
  • introduced to staining by his mother's cousin, Scientist Karl Weigert
