EARLY LIFE

  • Paul Gauguin was born in Paris on June 7, 1848.
  • When Paul was a young man he joined the French Navy, where he worked as a
  • stockbroker.
  • In 1873, he married a Danish women Mette Gad. They had five children together.

BECOMING AN ARTIST

  • Gauguin painted in his spare time when it became more than a hobby for him.
  • One of his works was accepted into the "Salon of 1876". This was an important
  • art show in Paris.
  • Gauguin was invited to show his works at an exhibition in 1879. His works
  • appeared amount artist like Picasso, Edgar Degas, and Claude Monet.

PURSUING ART

  • By 1883 he stopped working as a stockbroker to focus on his art.
  • He separated from his wife and kids and moved to Brittany, France.
  • In 1888 he created one of his most famous paintings "Vision of the Sermon".

MORE PAINTING

  • In 1889 Gauguin painted "The Yellow Christ".
  • Gauguin referred to himself as a savage, and he claimed to have Inca blood.
  • Gauguin was known as one of the art worlds colorful characters.

PRACTICE

  • Gauguin was friends with Van Gogh. In 1888 Van Gogh and Gauguin spent time in Goghs home in
  • Arles.
  • That time ended after an argument when Gogh pulled a razor on Gauguin.
  • In that same year Gauguin painted the now famous oil painting "Vision After the Sermon".

MOVING

  • Gauguin moved to Tahiti to barrow ideas from the native culture.
  • Here he made "La Orana Maria". This was based of the Tahitian mother and
  • child.
  • During this time he made many other works of art, on being a sculpture
  • called "Oviri", meaning savage.

LIFE IN TAHITI

  • Gauguin baca me involved with a 13 year old girl who served as a model for several of his
  • paintings.

BACK TO FRANCE

  • In 1893 Gauguin moved back to France to sell some of his works.
  • His paintings received mixed responses. He didn't sell many paintings.
  • He later moved to French Polynesia where he painted "Where Do We
  • Come From. What Are We? Where Are We Going?"

MORE MOVING

  • In 1901 Gauguin moved to the Marquesas Islands.
  • Gauguin had many heart attacks and suffered from syphilis.
  • On May 3, 1903 Gauguin died in his lonely island house.
  • After his death Gauguin's art received great reviews.
