peace

  • the absence of war
  • harmonious relations
  • inner contentment, serenity

Peace is not absence of conflict, it is the ability to handle conflict by peaceful means.

An actor and politician, Ronald Wilson Reagan (1911–2004) served as President of the United States (1981–1989).

He ranks highly in public opinion polls of U.S. Presidents and is credited with generating an ideological renaissance in American conservatism.

We can never obtain peace in the outer world until we make peace with ourselves.

Tenzin Gyatso (1935-) is the Dalai Lama, the 14th head monk of the Gelug or Yellow Hat school of Tibetan Buddhism.

First keep peace with yourself, then you can bring it to others.

First keep peace with yourself, then you can also bring peace to others. -Thomas à Kempis (1380-1471)

Thomas à Kempis was a German canon regular of the late medieval period and the probable author of The Imitation of Christ, one of the best known books of Christian devotion.

Peace demands greater heroism than war, greater fidelity to truth, and more purity of conscience.

Peace demands the most heroic labor and the most difficult sacrifice. It demands greater heroism than war. It demands greater fidelity to the truth and a much more perfect purity of conscience. (Thomas Merton, 1915-1968)

A Trappist monk and mystic, Thomas Merton was a writer, poet, social activist and student of comparative religion.
He wrote more than 70 books, mostly on spirituality, social justice, and pacifism. A keen proponent of interfaith understanding. Fr. Merton pioneered dialogue with prominent Asian spiritual figures, including the Dalai Lama.

Peace is not merely the absence of war. It is a state of mind. Lasting peace can come only to peaceful people.

Peace is not a relationship of nations. It is a condition of mind brought about by a serenity of soul. Peace is not merely the absence of war. It is also a state of mind. Lasting peace can come only to peaceful people. (Jawaharlal Nehru, 1889-1964)

The first Prime Minister of India, Nehru was a central figure in Indian politics for much of the 20th century. He emerged as the paramount leader of the Indian independence movement under the tutelage of Mahatma Gandhi and ruled India from its establishment as an independent nation in 1947 until his death in office in 1964. He s considered to be the architect of the modern Indian nation-state: a sovereign, socialist, secular, and democratic republic.

An eye for an eye only ends up making the whole world blind.

Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi (1869–1948) was the preeminent leader of Indian independence movement in British-ruled India.

Employing nonviolent civil disobedience, he led India to independence and inspired movements for civil rights and freedom across the world. The honorific Mahatma (Sanskrit: "venerable"), first applied to him in South Africa, is now used worldwide. In India, he is also called Bapu (Gujarati: "papa").

Peace cannot be kept by force. It can only be achieved by understanding.

Albert Einstein (1879–1955) was a German-born theoretical physicist and philosopher of science. He developed the general theory of relativity, one of the pillars of modern physics.

If we have no peace, it is because we have forgotten that we belong to each other.

Blessed Teresa of Calcutta (1910-1977), commonly known as Mother Teresa was a Catholic religious sister and missionary who lived most of her life in India.

She founded the Missionaries of Charity, a Roman Catholic religious congregation, which is active in 133 countries. Members of the institute must adhere to the vows of chastity, poverty and obedience, and a fourth vow, which is to give "wholehearted free service to the poorest of the poor." Mother Teresa was the recipient of the 1979 Nobel Peace Prize.

If you want to make peace with your enemy, you have to work with him. Then he becomes your partner.

If you want to make peace with your enemy, you have to work with your enemy. Then he becomes your partner (Nelson Mandela, 1918–2013)

A South African anti-apartheid revolutionary and nationalist, Mandela served as President of the Republic of South Africa from 1994 to 1999 and Secretary General of the Non-Aligned Movement from 1998 to 1999.

When the power of love
overcomes the love of power the world will know peace.

Jimi Hendrix, née Johnny Allen Hendrix (1942–1970), was an American musician, guitarist, singer, and songwriter.

Although his mainstream career spanned only four years, he is widely regarded as one of the most influential electric guitarists in the history of popular music, and one of the most celebrated musicians of the 20th century. The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame describes him as "arguably the greatest instrumentalist in the history of rock music."

Never be in a hurry; do everything quietly and in a calm spirit. Do not lose your inner peace for anything whatsoever, even if your whole world seems upset.

Nothing external to you has any power over you.

Ralph Waldo Emerson (1803–1882) was an American essayist, lecturer, and poet, who led the Transcendentalist movement of the mid-19th century. He was seen as a champion of individualism and a prescient critic of the countervailing pressures of society. He disseminated his thoughts through dozens of published essays and more than 1,500 public lectures across the United States.

People sleep peaceably in their beds at night only because rough men stand ready to do violence on their behalf.

Eric Arthur Blair (1903–1950), an English novelist, essayist, journalist and critic, used the pen name George Orwell. His work is marked by lucid prose, awareness of social injustice, opposition to totalitarianism, and commitment to democratic socialism.

Commonly ranked as one of the most influential English writers of the 20th century, he was one of the most important chroniclers of English culture of his generation.

God cannot give us a happiness and peace apart from Himself, because it is not there.

God cannot give us a happiness and peace apart from Himself, because it is not there. There is no such thing. (C.S. Lewis, 1898-1963).

Clive Staples Lewis, commonly called C. S. Lewis and known to friends and family as "Jack," was a novelist, poet, academic, medievalist, literary critic, essayist, lay theologian, and Christian apologist.

He is best known both for his fictional work, especially The Screwtape Letters and The Chronicles of Narnia, and for his nonfiction Christian apologetics, such as Mere Christianity and The Problem of Pain.

Lewis and fellow novelist J. R. R. Tolkien were close friends. Both served on the English faculty at Oxford University, and were active in the informal Oxford literary group known as the "Inklings."
