PEER FACILITATION
- process whereby well-trained + motivated young people undertake informal/organized educational activities with their peers over a period of time
PEER FACILITATION
- aimed at developing their knowledge, attitudes, beliefs, and skills + enabling them to be responsible for and protect their own health and welfare
A young person's peer group has a great influence on the way he/she behaves
The process of peer facilitation is perceived more like receiving advice from a friend 'in the know'
Peer facilitation is also a way to empower young people
PEER FACILITATOR
- One who gives assistance to someone within his own social group
- Has intimate knowledge of a situation or struggle that a peer is facing
ADULTS VS PEER FACILITATORS
KEY TRAITS OF A PEER FACILITATOR
DO's
He/she has to respect the diversity of the background of the peer members, their values + beliefs
DO's
He/she has to convince all the peer members that no idea or opinion is absurd or unwarranted.
DO's
He/she should give accurate + authentic information,
+ let the peer members make their own decisions based on facts
DO's
He/she should maintain confidentiality of the information provided by learners
DO's
He/she has to lead by example .

Facilitators DO NOT provide treatment or therapy

Peer facilitators need not be prescriptive.
DON'Ts
He/she is not to make value or judgement either of peer members or their views.
DON'Ts
He/she should not conduct sessions in a personalized manner.
DON'Ts
He/she need not comment on things that cannot be changed.
DON'Ts
He/she need not reject or ridicule any point of view expressed by peer members.
