PENCILS ✏️

The pencil is based on a roman instrument called a stylus. The pencil was first made in 1560. The main thing that pencils are made out of is called "graphite " which is a form of carbon . Why do they call it "pencil lead"? they call it pencil lead because in England in 1560 they found graphite but they thought that it was some sort of black lead , rather than a form of carbon .The mechanical pencil was invented in 1822.
One of the shortcomings of a pencil is that you have to keep on sharpening the pencil and for the mechanical pencil you have to keep putting lead in the pencil.
- The eraser on the pencil sometimes leave marks on your paper while you are erasing
- The lead on the mechanical pencil often breaks easily
These are some of the problems with pencils
- The pencil was first made in 1560
- the existence of the pencil was well known through out Europe in the 16th century .The earliest pencils were made out of chunks of graphite In 1726 the graphite was ground into smaller pieces of graphite which made the pencils smaller . In 1794 they came up with an idea and decided to mix graphite with potter's clay to make pencils. In 1870 pencil lead was also boiled in wax so that it could make the writing smoother and less smearing. Pencils are graded from 1 - 4 . The pencil still does what it did 450 years ago.

- Another problem is that the lead breaks easily .
- Some of the pencils don't have a comfortable grip
- The erasers waste easily

From all the problems we heard about the pencils is that the pencils need a better grip , we agree because sometimes when we are writing for a while our hands begin to hurt or get a little sore . The other thing is that we need to improve the lead because we have heard that the lead on all kinds of pencils break easily. Another main thing we need to improve on a pencil is the eraser , they say that the eraser either doesn't eraser good or it wastes to easily so we need to make the eraser on the pencil better and maybe make it longer on the pencils.
Our ideas
- make the eraser on a regular pencil bigger ,better quality on the erasers
- For the mechanical pencils make the lead stronger.
- For the grip try another type of material
We can try foam or a soft kind of rubber
We want the pencil to look like
- we would make the grip out of memory foam
- the lead on the mechanical pencil is going to be the same as the regular pencil lead. So the lead won't break easily
- Better quality on eraser so it can actually eraser good and not leave marks on the paper
- Make the pencil switch to a pen/ highlighter/ huge eraser
