Meanwhile, standing near the cross of Jesus were his mother, and his mother’s sister, Mary the wife of Clopas, and Mary Magdalene.
John 19:25

When Jesus saw his mother and the disciple whom he loved standing beside her, he said to his mother, “Woman, here is your son.”

Then he said to the disciple, “Here is you mother.” And from that hour the disciple took her into his own home.
John 19:27

WOMEN OF GALILEE

  • Mentioned in all four gospels as being at the cross and the tomb.
  • Association of women with the ministry of Jesus is unusual given 1st century attitudes toward women.
  • They followed Jesus from Galilee to Jerusalem.
  • The women represent faithful discipleship.

NAMES OF WOMEN AT THE CROSS VARIED

  • Mark 15:40-41, 47
  • Matthew 27:55-56, 61
  • Luke 23:49, 55-56
  • John19:25-27
  • Each writer chose those women who were most significant for the community they were addressing.

Women preparing spices for Jesus burial.
(Luke 23:55)

Stark contrast between these women of Galilee and the male disciples of Jesus.

JOSEPH OF ARIMATHEA LAYS THE BODY OF JESUS IN THE TOMB

LESSON 28

Untitled Slide

Joseph of Arimathea:
A pious member of the Sanhedrin, the Jewish ruling body that handed Jesus over to the Romans, requests Jesus body from Pilate to give him a proper burial before sunset.

Untitled Slide

“...a mixture of myrrh and aloes, weighing a hundred pounds.”

Jesus is buried as a king. Reflects Nicodemus generosity and love of Jesus.

Now there was a garden in the place where he was crucified, and in the garden there was a new tomb...they laid Jesus there.
John 19:41-42

...THERE WAS A GARDEN...

  • Jesus Passion began in a garden where he was betrayed by Judas and abandoned by his disciples.
  • He is again in a garden but this time surrounded by a new community.
  • Associated with the Garden of Eden and Jesus as the new Adam.

NICODEMUS COMES TO JESUS AT NIGHT

WE KNOW YOU ARE A TEACHER WHO HAS COME FROM GOD;

“Very truly, I tell you, no one can see the kingdom of God without being born from above...without being born of water and Spirit.”
John 3:3-5

“...Are you a teacher of Israel, and yet do not understand these things?...”
John 3:10-12

“The wind blows where it chooses, and you hear the sound of it, but you do not know where it comes from or where it goes. So it is with everyone who is born of the Spirit.”
John 3:8

MARY MAGDALENE COMES TO THE TOMB

LESSON 30

“They have taken the Lord out of the tomb, and we do not know where they have laid him.” (John20:2b)

So Peter and the other disciple went out and came to the tomb...
John 20:3-10

...and she saw two angels in white, sitting where the body of Jesus had been lying, one at the head and the other at the feet.
(John 20:12)

When she said this, she turned around and saw Jesus standing there, but she did not know it was Jesus.
John 20:14

Jesus said to her, “Mary!” She turned and said to him in Hebrew, “Rabbouni!”
(which means Teacher).
John 20:16
