PRESENTATION OUTLINE
ALKALI METALS
Physical- low melting point, low boiling point, low density, very soft.
Chemical- highly reactive, largest atomic radii in theirs periods, low ionization energy, low electronegativities.
ALKALI METALS EXAMPLES:
Lithium
&
Sodium
ALKALINE EARTH METALS
Physical- low density, low melting point, low boiling point, shiny.
Chemical- soluable in liquid ammonia, strong reducing agent, metal ions, solvated electrons.
ALKALINE EARTH METAL EXAMPLES:
Magnesium
&
Calcium
TRANSITION METALS
Physical- malleable, ductile, high density, high melting point.
Chemical- large range of oxidation, used as a catalyst, successive ionization energies, form colored compounds.
TRANSITION METALS EXAMPLES:
Titanium
&
Iron
METALLOIDS
Physical- shiny or dull, average conductivity, solid at room temp., ductile.
Chemical- gains electron when bonding to the right, looses electron when gaining to the left, behave as non metals, intermediate in nature.
METALLOIDS EXAMPLES:
Aluminum
&
Arsenic
HALOGENS
Physical- high boiling point, low melting point, low boiling point.
Chemical- electronegativity, diatomic molecules, high effective nuclear charge, anions.
HALOGEN EXAMPLES:
Fluorine
&
Chlorine
NOBLE GASES
Physical- odorless, colorless, high melting point, high boiling point.
Chemical- monatomic gases, very low reactivity, largest ionization energies, weak interatomic forces.
NOBLE GASES EXAMPLES:
Helium
&
Neon
