Periodic Table Review

BY: MATTHEW CHO PER. 4

Dmitri Mendeleev

  • Was the inventor of the periodic table
  • Born February 8, 1834
  • Had extensive knowledge about the elements
  • However, he did not believe in the existence of atoms
  • Organized table by atomic weight, not atomic number

Valence Electrons

  • Electrons on the last outer shell of an atom
  • Rule of Duet: First shell can only have 2 electrons
  • Rule of Octet: All shells after the first can only have 8 electrons
  • The first group has 1 valence electron, and the second has 2
  • Groups 3-12 don't follow a pattern, 13-18 leave off where it ended

The Different Types of Elements

  • Noble Gases & Halogens
  • Alkali Metals & Alkaline Earth Metals
  • Actinides & Lanthinides
  • Transition Metals
  • Metals, Nonmetals, Gases, Metalloids

Periodic Table Structure

  • Alkali metals on far left of periodic table (not hydrogen)
  • Alkaline Earth Metals are to the right of Alkali Metals
  • Transition metals are in the middle box of the periodic table
  • Noble gases on the far right of periodic table
  • Halogens to the left of noble gases

Periodic Table Structure Contd.

  • The metals, nonmetals, metalloids, and gases are
  • between the noble gases and halogens
  • The Lanthanides and Actinides are on the very bottom
  • The top row is lanthanides
  • The bottom row is actinides
