PALEOZOIC ERA

  • It started 542 million years ago and ended 250 million years ago
  • There are six periods in the Paleozoic Era
  • The periods are Cambrain, Ordovician, Silurian, Devonian, Carboniferous, and Perminan

ABOUT THE EXTINCTION

  • The largest extinction(The Great Dying)
  • Many theories
  • 90-95% marine life died
  • 70% land mammals died
  • This extinction occurred 251.4 million years ago

THEORIES OF EXTINCTION

IMPACT, VOLCANISM, OCEAN ANOXIA, JOINT CATASTROPHES

Impact- A asteroid or comet would have hit the ocean which was 70% of the earth’s body.

Volcanism- that the earth underwent a series of massive volcanic events. These large volcanic events could have led to aerosol event that may have slowly killed the food chain and led to acid rain.

Ocean Anoxia- The ocean circulation stopped which led to a drop in oxygen content in the water and increased in Carbon Dioxide.

Joint Catastrophes- Explains many of the theories. It sums up all of the possibilities and shows how they all may have occurred one after another in a short period of time(few million years.)
