- Peter was only 10 years old when he got the throne
- He started controlling the government when he turned 17
- Looked at Western Europe for help
TRIP TO WESTERN EUROPE
- In 1967 peter traveled to Western Europe
- He studied the European government, technology, and culture
- When he came back to Russia he brought teachers, experts, and soldiers.

WESTERNIZATION
- Started enforcing the new findings
- Became Autocratic - Ruling with unlimited authority
- He wanted a better military, more land, and more royal power
- Started new teaching methods and ideas
EXPANDING BORDERS
- Wanted a warm-water port, but failed to gain ottoman territory
- After many battles lost against Sweden, he finally defeated them in 1709
- Created the city St. Petersburg to setup trade routes
PETERS DEATH
- Died in 1725
- Throne went to Catherine the Great
