PRESENTATION OUTLINE
Phaethon, who was the son of Clymene, grew up in the East land of Ethiopia. As he grew up ,his mother pointed to where Eos lived, goddess of dawn, telling him his father lived there in the sky. He was always the best.
Then a boy named Epaphos was rumored to be the son of Zeus. Phaëthon didn't believe him because there was no proof. Epaphos was proud too, one day he lost his temper with Phaëthon saying that what his mother told him was false ideas. He was filled with rage and rushed home.
He asked his mother for some proof of who his father was. His mother told him that it was true. She told him to go to the the Eastern palace of Apollo who lived not far away and to speak to him.
So he visited the palace of Apollo. It was fill with pillars of gold and gleaming ivory. He saw the god and asked if he was his son. He said he was indeed his son. Phaeton wanted proof.
He asked to ride the Chariot of the sun across the heavens. He frowned, he tried to advise him to not ride it.But Phaethon was stubborn and wanted to prove to the mortal he was his son. So he let him ride it.
So he went on the chariot and Apollo put magic ointment on him so he would not burn in the sun. At first he went up and up, until the earth below him was cold and pale. Phaethon became dizzy. Then the horses dropped down. The horses panicked because they were masterless.
As they came close to the ground the earth dried up and cracked apart.
Meadows were reduced to white ashes. Cities perished, rivers steamed and dried up to dust. Even the Alps were bare and dried. The North African plain was dried as we know it today.
Phaethon died in the fall!
Unhappy Clymene and her daughters wandered over the whole earth seeking the body of the boy they loved so well. They weeped over his grave.
The gods pitied their grief for their son and changed them into poplar trees, which weep with tears of amber in memory of Phaëthon.
