Pharmacist

Dr. Sara Yoeun | BSc. PharmD.
Hello everyone.

First I want to thank you for choosing to come today to learn more about the profession of pharmacy.

My name is Sara and I hope that I can provide some insight and pique your interest for what opportunities are available within the health care field.

About Me

  • Montcalm: 2001 to 2005
  • Full-time: Retail Pharmacy
  • Part-time: Family Health Team
I graduated from Montcalm in 2005.

I work full time in a retail pharmacy and part time at a Family Health Team with a set of family doctors

How did I get here?

So how did I get into pharmacy from Montcalm?

Career goals in high school...

  • Helping others
  • Sciences - Chemistry & Biology
  • Job stability
In grade 10 we had civics and careers (is that still a course?) at that time I wasn't sure what I wanted to be when I grew up.

Broadly speaking, I always wanted to help others; whether it was with academics or with life experiences.

I loved math and science in high-school; it continuously amazed me.

As Shackelton would say: physics should make you go "WOW!"

I also knew I wanted to do something I loved that still provided new and exciting things - with a low risk of losing my job.

Teaching?

Naturally, I really wanted to teach. I always seemed to be the one classmates would come to for help.

Especially in math/physics where I would show classmates different ways to approach the problems at hand.

Medicine?

Many people encouraged me to go to med school and to become a physician. I liked the idea of being in the medical field but I wasn't fond of the lifestyle of doctors. I felt like I would burn out very quickly.

Post-Secondary

  • UWO: Bachelor's of Science
  • Major: Chemistry and Medical Sciences
  • Worked part-time in the front shop of a chain drug store
Keeping all my doors opened, I pursued post-secondary in the science field.

I learned some subjects didn't appeal to me like they did in high-school. I also discovered other parts of science I had never considered before.

While working in a drug store; I also gained many personal skills such as communication, customer service, money management etc.

What's the difference between Tylenol and Advil?

What can I give my daughter for cough?

Which nasal spray should I use?

Which one of these work better?

Is this safe to take with my other medications?

What can I use for vomiting and/or diarrhea?

Let me get the pharmacist for you

Even though I knew the answers to some of those questions from self-learning, legally, recommendations about any type of medication has to be given by the pharmacist.

Pharmacy!

Teaching + Medicine =
This was the turning point - where I decided that I could combine the two career choices.

I applied to Teacher's Colleges and Pharmacy schools in my last year at Western.

Pharmacy School

  • Waterloo or Toronto
  • 4 year program
  • Licensing Exams
Only two schools in Ontario - with Waterloo being open for only 4 years.

To become a pharmacist, you have to get your degree; and then write two exams to get your licence. Much like physicians who write the boards.

What do you think pharmacists do?

More than just counting by 5...

  • Prescription checking: appropriate dose, drug interactions, drug allergies, correct drug to the correct patient
  • Counseling on new medications
  • Vaccinations, medication reviews
  • Over the counter recommendations
  • Chronic disease management (hypertension, diabetes etc.)

Rave/Rant

  • Helping others every day, patient relationships, practical application of science, responsible for other's health, working with other healthcare professionals
  • Variable hours, standing for long periods of time, heavy workload, mentally draining
What are the benefits of your career?

What are the challenges of your career?

Endless Opportunities

What are the current prospects in your career?

So much choice; even within pharmacy alone. Profession is rapidly changing and growing - recruitment into the schools are looking for more than just a good clinician - leadership and innovation

Advice:

  • Get experience!
  • Communication skills - verbal and written
  • Well rounded, keep doors open
  • Never give up - the challenges of school are all worth it in the end
Working in retail developed my communication skills early on.

I participated in sports (badminton) and music throughout my time at Montcalm

Pharmacy school is very challenging and demanding
