4 STATES OF MATTER

  • Solid
  • Liquid
  • Gas
  • Plasma

SOLIDS

  • Have a definite shape and volume
  • Particles are packed closely together
  • Very little energy so particles only vibrate
  • Particles have tight bonds and are packed closely together

LIQUIDS

  • The volume is definite but takes the shape of any container
  • It has more energy which allows it to flow
  • Particles are loosely packed with loose bonds

GASES

  • No definite shape or volume
  • Has lots of energy and moves at high speeds
  • Particles are not connected so they are free to move

PLASMA

  • No definite shape or volume
  • Extremely fast with high energy
  • No bonds between particles
  • Not that common on Earth

PHASES CHANGE- to ADD or REMOVE (heat) ENERGY

  • Melt- change from solid to liquid
  • Freeze- change from liquid to solid
  • Condensation- change from gas to liquid
  • Boil- change from liquid to gas
  • Sublimate- change from solid to gas

Temperature stays the same during a phase change

Phase changes do NOT occur because of temperature but because ENERGY is either ADDED or REMOVED
