THE BEGINNING OF PHIDIAS

• Born in Athens Greece in 490 BCE
• His father was Charmides
• Born before war against Persians
• After war, Pericles made Athens most powerful city-state
• he grew up knowing that he lived in a powerful city-state

EDUCATION

• Normal education in gymnasium
• Learned math, atheletics, music, and poetry
• Learned about the Homeric epics
• They had a great impact on his view of the gods
• Got training from Agelades of Argos, built statue of Zeus

MORE ABOUT MY CHILDHOOD

• He saw many tragedies such as "Persai" and "Oresteria"
• Had a profound effect on his sculptures
• Sophists had some effect on his sculpting too
• Sophists teachings like humanistic teachings

LIFE'S WORK

• Athens kept ruins same from war
• Had an effect on early work
• Sculptures- monuments to Athenian victory
• Peace treaty made with Persians
• Tore down ruins-started the Parthenon- Phidias incharge

MORE OF LIFE'S WORK

• Responsible for statue of Athena in Parthenon
• Ictinus, Callicrates
• Phidias was accused of sacrilege in 437 BCE left Athens
• Asked by Elis build model of Zeus statue for temple in Olympia
• Set up workshop and worked there for 5 years

DEATH OF PHIDIAS

• Died shortly after completed the Zeus statue
• 430 BCE probably in Elis, Greece
• Many other sculptures and statues were attributed to him
• a bronze Apollo near the Parthenon, a marble Aphrodite in the Athenian Agora.
• a gold and ivory Aphrodite in Elis, and a famous Amazon in Ephesus.

WHAT OTHER PEOPLE THOUGHT

• Liked him at first because helped build Parthenon
• Then not because he committed sacrilege to statue of Athena
