It was a period when people used logical thinking to answer questions.

VOLTAIRE (1694- 1778)

  • He believed that no matter what your opinion was, you had the right to say it.
  • He wrote plays, essays, poetry that stated his ideas.
  • Yes, because the right to have your own opinion is still enforced.

JOHN LOCKE

  • He believed that all men were equal in the state of nature.
  • He didn't support the divine rights of authoritarian government.
  • Yes, because his ideas are used in the Declaration of Independence.

JEAN-JACQUES ROSSEAU

  • Believed in forming a society people entered into a social compact with each other.
  • He made the social contract that helped to balance benefits with obligations.
  • Yes, because our society is very organized.

BARON DE MONTESQUIEU

  • He believed in a separation of power in the government.
  • He showed his own theory of an effective government to everyone.
  • Yes, because our government has a limited amount of power over each other.
