Why no water standards?
Minnesota doesn't have state water standards for river phosphorus, but they are under development.

Once we have the state standards, we will be able to clarify if the metropolitan area of the Mississippi River is impaired or not due to phosphorus.

RUNOFF SOLUTIONS

  • Many steps can be taken to reduce runoff of make it less harmful:
  • Residents can help by using lawn chemicals carefully
  • Using phosphorus-free dish washing detergents and soaps
  • Picking up your dogs poop
  • Keeping leaves out of the drain

THERE ARE MANY WAYS YOU CAN HELP YOUR RIVER!

YOU CAN ALSO HELP YOUR RIVER BY PICKING UP GARBAGE THAT MIGHT FLOW INTO THE RIVER

Garbage harms animals and the environment. It can easily be mistaken as food for animals, and they will eat it.

OTHER WAYS YOU CAN HELP INCLUDE:

  • Inform people by social media
  • Report any carp you catch to the DNR
  • Ask your neighbors to help you clean leaves out of the storm drain
  • Take appropriate procedures when camping
  • Do more research on other reasons of concern for the Mississippi
DNR is the minnesota department of natural resources.

When camping go to the bathroom AT LEAST 100 big steps away from any body of water and cover it up.

Other reasons of concern include bacteria, river flow, asian carp, zebra mussels, and many more.
