WHERE AND WHEN THE PIÑATA ORIGINATED

  • The piñata originated in China
  • It is a common misconception that the piñata was originated in a Spanish country
  • The piñata was brought to other countries, including but not limited to: Italy, France, Mexico, and America
  • The piñata is now part of the Posada in the Catholic culture
  • Discovered by Marco Polo on his trip to China

SYMBOLS

  • 10 points represents the 10 Commandments
  • 7 points represents the seven deadly sins
  • The stick that is used to hit the piñata represents love
  • Hitting it represents hitting or demolishing sins

MARCO POLO

  • When he found the piñata the Chinese made water buffaloes, oxen, and cows in colorful papers and put seeds, fruit, or candies wrapped in paper
  • In the 14th century, Marco Polo brought the piñata to Italy, where they used it during Lent
  • The first Sunday of Lent was called Pignatta Sunday, and piñatas play a huge roll in that
